Bromeliads and Mosquitos within the District

Non-native /Ornamental Bromeliad species hold water in their trunks are a haven for mosquitoes.
In 2021 mosquitoes reproducing in containers and bromeliads accounted for 30% of all TIPS submitted within the District.
Within the District the mosquito that makes bromeliads its habitat is the Aedes albopictus. Aedes albopictus are most active during the daylight hours.
The District recommends removal of Ornamental Bromeliads from landscaping as the treatment for mosquitoes originating from these plants.
